How Effective Is Billboard Advertising?

The first 24-sheet billboard was setup in 1889 at the Paris Exposition and later was adapted as an advertising platform, mostly for circuses, traveling shows and movies. This type of advertising became more popular with the Ford's invention of the Model T and as the highways and roads became more used the reach of billboards expanded.

The billboard advertisements are meant to catch the attention of a passing set of eye balls and to communicate the message quickly so the person that saw it would be left pondering on what he or she just saw, processing the information and there fore setting it into the long term memory. If the advertisement is designed correctly, billboard type of advertising is very effective, capturing the attention of the viewer and uploading the information to their brain.

Although, other effective means of advertising have came about with the invention of the Internet, billboard advertising continues to perform very well.

While more and more billboards seem to be popping up on every corner, like Starbucks, the governement has been crackign down with new billboards regulations and bans due to the cluttering of the city scapes and distraction factors. 

The more popular billboard locations get snapped up pretty quickly and actually some are completely bought out by advertising agencies so the only way to get your ad on them would be to hire the agency that owns slots on it. Some of the more out of the way billboards located on less traveled roads and highways are still available a lot of the time for anyone to purchase for anywhere form the price of a decent car up to a new luxury one. 

It seems to me that for the same price, a lot more can be done advertising on the Internet, with Pay-Per-Click and Banner advertising. So although billboards are great as a means of getting your message out there, as long as you have the cash for it. The fact is that there are other very effective avenues are available for those that do a little bit of research and searching the web, at a lot lower cost.
